Symposium Spotlight: Shelia Huggins

Shelia Huggins is a solo practitioner, law professor, North Carolina representative for the Democratic National Committee, and social media personality. Shelia’s firm, Shelia Huggins, PLLC, focuses on business, contracts, sports, media, internet, employment, and entertainment law. Shelia teaches an Entertainment and Business Law course as an adjunct professor at North Carolina Central School of Law. For nearly nine years, Shelia also worked for the city of Durham, where she was involved in the programming of citywide events and projects supporting neighborhood revitalization efforts and economic development.

Shelia is passionate about city, state, and local politics. She recently became the chair of Friends of Durham, one of three major political action committees in the city. Shelia’s goal: to revamp the organization’s image, including its website and social media presence; increase its involvement in Durham politics, and;  provide “a safe space for quality conversations” in a time of intense polarization. Her vision is for the Friends of Durham to connect with members of all races in the city and focus on four key issues: education, crime rates, local governance, and the city’s economy.

Shelia’s state political involvement includes hosting the Are You Fit to be a Politician video series, which features interviews with political candidates from across the state and airs on social media platforms. Shelia’s interviewees have included Charlotte Mayor Vy Lyles, former Durham Mayor Bill Bell, and U.S. House of Representatives Congresswoman Alma Adams. At the national level, Shelia represents North Carolina Democrats as a member of the Democratic National Committee. She is one of six North Carolinians that the governing body of the North Carolina Democratic Party, the State Executive Committee, elected to serve in this role.

In addition to her other roles, Shelia runs a fitness, politics, business, and lifestyle YouTube channel. Shelia covers topics ranging from her workouts, snack ideas and healthy groceries, to her legal career and tips for business owners.

Shelia Huggins will join the Wake Forest Journal of Business & Intellectual Property Law for our annual spring symposium on February 28, 2020. Shelia will be speaking on the panel, Athletes as Intellectual Property Owners: Analyzing the Business Implications of Athletes Receiving Compensation for Use of Their Names, Images, and Likenesses. The panel will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Shelia will be a co-panelist with attorney Stuart Paynter, along with moderator Professor Simone Rose.
